Westmoreland Recreation Commission
April 10, 2011
The April 10, 2011 Westmoreland Recreation Commission meeting was called to order by President Brian Hornaday.
People who were present were: Brian Hornaday, Amy Young, Kyle Hutson, Scott Plummer, Cathy Minihan, Dennis Caffrey, Dan Schlochtermeier, Shawn Smith, and Vic Poteet.
Scott started the meeting off with a discussion about the 60 ft. pegs for the bases. The pegs may be missing. They dug fairly deep, but didn’t want to dig further due to baseball games and did not want to damage the field. They were there at the end of the season and this issue will need to be further investigated. If they are missing, it will take some work to put new ones in.
Discussion then began on the various age groups of teams. T-ball: only a couple more registrations were needing to be placed on teams. Brian and Cathy finished this and the teams should be set. 14-16 Girls: Westy only has two girls signed up and St. George has 19 for a total of 21 girls. The Commission discussed letting our two go to St. George and we would then take one of the St. George boys teams and they would provide the coach. This needs to be done quickly so Cathy can order the boys shirts with the rest of the shirts. Brian will call Patrick Lee and give our opinion on the matter of the spitting of the 14-16 girls team. They are wanting to have a 14G team and a 15-16G team. The overall opinion is we do not think it would be a fair split, but ultimately we would have no say in it. The Commission felt maybe the issue needs to be taken to the League meeting. It was mentioned that the 11-13 Boys tournament would be held in Westmoreland this year. 11-13 Boys: There may be 2 more boys signing up. This would be fine as long as the late fee is paid. Also, the decision needs to be made ASAP so shirts can be ordered.
The newly build shed was discussed and what still needs to be finished. Everything was finished except the doors, paint, and caulking. Dan, Brian, and Scott discussed getting it finished and the paint color. The suggested paint colors were gray with black trim. A combination lock was also discussed instead of a keyed lock to make things simpler. The doors really need to get put on so the new equipment can be put in the shed. Brian purchased around $2000 of equipment and supplies that needs to be stored.
Dan Schlochtermeier provided the Commission with receipts for the shed supplies and requested a check so he could get his bill taken care of. Everything was given to Kyle. The total cost for the shed was about $1500 which was much cheaper than what was previously discussed and much better quality that the shed made by Rock Creek.
Equipment was then further discussed and it is believed all equipment necessary has been bought. We may even have enough game balls for next year depending on how many are in the concession stand. The total spent at Dick’s Sporting Goods was $2,191. The only other items needed would be clip boards/cases for the coaches.
The scheduling meeting for games will be April 17th @ 2;00 and Brian will be attending this meeting. Coaches Meeting will be at Wamego Middle School on May 14 @ 9:00.
Brian may be resigning if his house gets sold. The Rec. Commission needs to be thinking about who may be filling this position.
7-8 Boys team was discussed again and it was determined that Hunter Taylor wants to play up on the 7-8 team instead of playing t-ball. The commission agreed this was okay and Brian flipped a coin which placed Hunter on Dan Schlochtermeier’s team.
This year the Westy ball teams consist of the following:
3 -- t-ball teams
1 -- 7-8 girls
1 -- 9-10 girls
2 -- 11-13 girls
2 -- 7-8 boys
1 -- 9-10 boys
1 -- 11-13 boys
? -- possibly 1 -- 14-16 boys
Coaches are able to reserve the t-ball field if needed when not in use.
Scott discussed the concession stand. Rock Creek band will be running it again and Mrs. Basa is in charge of it. We need to stock the supplies for the bathrooms and RC will keep it clean and stocked. We need to make sure our supplies are not being used for the high school games. Kyle will purchase the supplies needed for the bathrooms. Both freezers are working at this time. We may need to put up a couple shelves in the concession stand for supplies.
Cathy is ordering t-ball medals with the t-shirt order. Brian will take care of scheduling the t-ball games. Coaches need to meet with the parents and let them know the expectations of the players and the parents. Also need to let parents know the $1 fee at the Wamego tourney is money used to pay for medals at those games. We pay very little toward these medals.
9-10 boys have 9 players because 1 player has a broken foot. They may need to pull a player up if short to make a team of 9.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:00pm.
